Preparing Your Home For Fall

Each September in the northern hemisphere we experience the fall or autumnal equinox. The equinox will mark the start of fall as the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are equal. Day by day we start to experience less daylight and tend to spend more time inside. As the leaves change and you change into your fall routine, be sure to transition your home into the season as well. It doesn’t matter if you live in a studio apartment or a 3000 square feet or more home, décor can set the mood during fall of a relaxing haven after a long day. Transition your home from fresh summer vibes into a more warm and cozy fall retreat. Here are a few ways to prepare different spaces in your home for fall:

Outdoor Space: You may have a large front yard, a mid-sized porch, or just a front door to decorate. No matter the size of space, set the tone before entering your home. Decorate your door by creating a wreath using corn stalks, leaves, autumn branches, or pinecones.  On your porch, place a candle in a lantern to light the steps and replace the summer flowers from your planters with cascading greenery, cabbage, and add height with grasses. In the yard, set up a fall scene with hay bales, or fill a wooden crate with pumpkins or mums.

Living Room: Bring fashion into the home and dress up your sofa with fall accessories. As you add scarves, layers, and boots to your wardrobe create a cozy and layered look in your living room. Switch up your accent pillows and blankets to include faux bois patterned pillows, knit textiles, and flannel throw blankets.  The same patterns and knitting styles used in your wardrobe can be used to warm up the home.

Kitchen: Most commonly the kitchen is used to appeal to the sense of taste, this fall heighten the sense of smell in your home using the stovetop.  Simmer a pot of spices on your stove to create a warm aroma. Combine fall favorites of cinnamon, apple peels, oranges rinds, cloves, bay leaves, and nutmeg. Add water and simmer your favorite scents to create a fall essence.

Dining Room: As you set the table to prepare for family meals, gatherings, and holiday celebrations the focal point of your dining table should be your centerpiece. Bring the outdoors in with a centerpiece filled with leaves, fall blooms, gourds, twigs and fresh cut flowers.  With the perfect centerpiece you can then create a tablescape by adding candle holders, a table runner, dishes, flatware, and glassware.

Bedroom: In your bedroom style your nightstand with fall flowers and a candle.  Dark purples and rich orange hues of fresh flowers like lily or hydrangea or dried bouquets of lavender can add a special touch on your nightstand. Lavender is perfect for your nightstand as it is known to be calming, soothing, and have sedative effects to help with insomnia and anxiety when its scent is inhaled. Burning a candle can add fragrances of cranberry, spices, wood, pumpkin, and leaves to your nighttime routine.

Get your home ready for fall! Fall is associated with harvest, fulfillment, and slowing down, so set the tone in your home. Decorate your home to parallel the feelings of cooler weather, hot chocolate, making memories at the fair, scarves, pumpkins, candy corn, and all of fall’s enjoyment.
