Painting Trends: The Classics

In consultations, often times home stagers are asked for paint color suggestions. As a homeowner are you preparing to sell your home and looking for neutral paint suggestions that will appeal to all?

Beige! White! Grey! Pick a color, any color… well not just ANY color. Picking the right color is important and should reflect recent trends. Painting a home can be a fun DIY project or reasonably priced by hiring professionals. Painting yields a high return on investment when preparing your home for the real estate market. Consider a fresh coat of paint for a drastic change at minimal costs. Consider colors that are classics, yet trendy. Year to year we see the hues of the neutrals, white, and greys change, but the most recent paint trend is grey tones on the wall as the new neutral.

Here are a few of my neutral paint recommendations by Benjamin Moore: Simply White, White Dove, Gardenia, Revere Pewter, Grey Owl and Willow Creek.

Simply White was the Benjamin Moore Color of the Year for 2016 and is a crisp white.  White Dove is more of a classic off white while Gardenia is a creamy white. Revere Pewter is light grey with a hint of taupe, Grey Owl is a light and bright grey, while Willow Creek is the perfect warm grey.

So, what color and paint trends should we look for in 2017?

The 2017 color of the year for Benjamin Moore is Shadow 2117-30, the 2017 color of the year for Pantone is Greenery Pantone 15-0343, Glidden Paint named Byzantine Blue as the 2017 Color of the Year, and Sherwin-Williams named Poised Taupe SW 6039 as the color of the year. The 2017 predictions are in,  what was the popular color used on the walls of your childhood home?

In the 1990s, we saw trends of beige, off-white, Earth tones, and muted reds. In the 2000s, accent walls brought out bold and daring colors, calm and soothing blues  were popular, and neutrals used on walls were beige or brown. In the 2010s, color became less popular as neutral colors are the trend shift with a focus on warm greys and modern whites with contrasting black. More organic color such as softer greens and blues have been the major color trends seen since 2010.

As a home stager I always suggest warm paint colors along with whites and neutrals. It is also fun to check out the trends and colors of the year to use as accents in other areas of the home. You can create clean, bright, open spaces using neutral paint colors to appeal to the majority of buyers and incorporate the colors of the year for an updated fun pop of color.
